5th grade, for many, is when the initial magical introduction to playing a band instrument occurs.  We learn: to care for the instruments, tone development, technique, musical notation, playing with a group, etc.  We have one performance towards the end of each semester.  Students are expected to practice daily a reasonable amount of time suitable to their ability level (15-30 minutes).  After all, one will likely improve with effort!
