7th Grade - Spanish 1 with Señora Muehlhaus
Spanish 1 at St. Charles is the same first-year Spanish class taught throughout the Monroe County Community School Corporation. As most students from St. Charles will be matriculating into one of the local high schools, teaching the same course allows St. Charles' graduates to obtain a year of foreign language credit upon entry to the MCCSC. As such we focus on the first five chapters from the first book in the Descubre series. The first two and half chapters are taught first semester prior to the final exam. Second semester wraps up the five chapters and the year culminates with speaking and writing exams.
Students learn how to greet each other, introduce themselves and have basic conversations in the first chapter while also learning numbers, days of the week, months of the year and how to tell time. Students also learn subject pronouns, articles and nouns in Spanish and how to conjugate the verb SER. In the second chapter students learn about classroom objects, places around campus, school subjects and how to talk about their schedule. Students learn how to conjugate regular -AR verbs, form questions in Spanish and the verb ESTAR with prepositions of location. In the third chapter students learn vocabulary about family members and also how to describe them using descriptive and possessive adjectives. Students also learn how to conjugate regular -ER and -IR verbs along with the verbs VENIR, TENER and expressions with TENER. In the fourth chapter students learn about hobbies, pastimes and sports. Students learn how to say they are going somewhere or going to do something using the verb IR and learn all about irregular STEM-CHANGING verbs. In the fifth and final chapter, students learn weather vocabulary, ordinal numbers, travel terms and phrases. Students learn how to indicate that something is occurring now using present progressive, use ESTAR with conditions and emotions, utilize direct object nouns and pronouns and understand the different times to use SER and ESTAR.
Students work on vocabulary acquisition, sentence building, listening and reading comprehension, writing and speaking skills and attempt to become proficient in Spanish.
