6th Grade - World Cultures with Señora Muehlhaus
Sixth Grade Foreign Language at St. Charles will focus on the World Cultures that speak Spanish as well as the language itself. The class is divided into four terms/grading periods, each with its own underlying theme, vocabulary and project.
Term 1 -
The first 9-week-term will focus on why to study a foreign language, why to study Spanish, where Spanish is spoken and who famous Hispanics are in the United States. We will work with Greetings & Introductions Spanish vocabulary. Students will create spoken and written dialogs/conversations using their Spanish vocabulary terms and will research famous Hispanics.
Term 2 -
The second 9-week-term will focus on Spain, the birthplace of the Spanish language. We will learn about the country, its people and its features including soccer, bullfighting and the royal family. Vocabulary will be focused on family member terms. Students will do an art project and an in-class presentation utilizing their Spanish family member vocab.
Term 3 -
The third 9-week-term (the first of the new year) will focus on South America. We will learn about the countries that make up South America but focus in on Ecuador. We will learn about the Galapagos Islands National Park and take a look at its animal inhabitants. We will work with days of the week, months of the year and animal vocabulary terms. Students will research animals of the Galapagos Islands.
Term 4 -
Our final 9-week-term will focus on Central America & Mexico. We will zero in on Panama and Mexico while learning about markets in the Spanish-speaking world. Vocabulary will focus on numbers, colors and basic travel phrases. Students will research common foods and handicrafts sold as well as make various items to "buy" and "sell" during in Latin American Market Day.
